Fans want Pacquiao to take on Bradley
By DAVID A. AVILA,
The Press-Enterprise
A recent survey revealed boxing's reigning pound-for-pound
champion, Manny Pacquiao, should fight Timothy Bradley next.
Hardcore boxing fans, or at least the majority of those voting
on the survey, do not want Floyd Mayweather Jr., Antonio
Margarito or Miguel Cotto matched against the Filipino super
star. Instead most like what they see in a matchup between two
pint-sized destroyers, Bradley and Pacquiao.
Bradley is hedging his bets.
"I want to fight the best fighters in the world. Manny Pacquiao
or even Floyd Mayweather," said Bradley (26-0, 11 KOs) during a
press conference on Saturday following his unanimous decision
over welterweight slugger Luis Carlos Abregu. Click Here For More
Amir Khan says he'd fight Timothy Bradley
By Leighton Ginn, The Desert Sun
RANCHO MIRAGE — WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan of
Great Britain said he would relish the chance to fight Timothy
Bradley, as it was reported on the Daily Mirror, a British
tabloid.
“I'll fight Tim Bradley. It's the first time he's called me
out,” Khan was quoted in the story. “I'm going to Vegas and I'll
talk to Golden Boy (his promoters). I would love the fight. Good
style for me. I'm fighting Timothy Bradley next. I'm gonna tell
Golden Boy. Let's see if they want it for real. Talk is cheap.”
Gary Shaw, Bradley's promoters, have said they had a fight with
Khan set up for the first part of the year, but it fell apart
when Khan signed with Golden Boy.

Bradley Believable
Welter; Angulo Wreaks Havoc
By Roy & Marlene
Marquez - Pound4Pound.com
Fighting for the first time as a welterweight since 2006,
Timothy Bradley boxed and banged his way to a convincing twelve
round decision over Argentine Luis Carlos Abregu before a packed
house at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA.
“You got to be a risk taker if you want to go somewhere in life
and I’m a risk taker”, explained Bradley in stepping up to take
on this challenge.
In a clash of undefeated fighters, Abregu climbed between the
ropes the #5 rated welterweight in the world. Bradley entered
the ring the reigning, but not defending, WBO Jr. Welterweight
Champion and quickly sustained a cut in the first round
following an accidental clash of heads. Increasingly aggressive
in round two, Bradley raked Abregu with a straight right that
wobbled the Argentine’s legs. Click Here For More

The biggest and most anticipated fight in boxing is Manny
Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather. What could be the
highest-grossing fight of all time doesn't look like it will
happen this year, however, as Pacquiao's representative, Top
Rank, has given Mayweather until Friday to decide if he wants to
fight Pacquiao on Nov. 13. Mayweather has given no indication he
wants to fight again in 2010.
A couple of levels down but high on the best-of-the-rest board
is the super middleweight showdown of the Olympic Andres — 19-1
Dirrell vs. 22-0 Ward — good friends and 2004 medalist teammates
who are tentatively scheduled to meet Sept. 25 in the third

Hudson Takes “Perro” for a Walk
By Steve Kim - maxboxing
In May of 2009, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo suffered his
first professional loss against Kermit Cintron, who, despite
being better known as a puncher, boxed and moved his way to a
12-round unanimous decision by scores of 116-112 across the
board. Versus the lateral movement of Cintron, for much of the
night, Angulo’s attempts to corral his foe were as futile as a
dog chasing its own tail.
The book was out on Angulo: move, move and move some more on the
heavy-handed Mexican.
From this point forward, anyone who faces “Perro” would employ
this strategy, which could prove to be a bit of a problem in a
division that boasts the likes of Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto,
Sergio Martinez, Sergiy Dzinziruk, Yuri Foreman and Vanes
Martirosyan, among others. Simply put, fighters who are more
athletic than Angulo.

Bradley believes he can
draw fans if he fights Pacquiao
By Robert Morales, Press Telegram
Not only is Timothy Bradley one of the better pound-for-pound
fighters in the game today, he's also one of the most respected.
It would be difficult to find one person in the industry with
anything negative to say about the overall character of the man.
But that doesn't mean Bradley won't take a stand when his worth
is challenged like it was recently when promoter Bob Arum said
Bradley would not be considered for a fight with Manny Pacquiao.
"Bradley is an excellent fighter, but nobody's ever heard of
him," said Arum, Pacquiao's promoter. "Very few people have
heard of him. It has nothing to do with his abilities. He's a
very able guy. But he hasn't been promoted so that he's like a
household name where he could be a viable pay-per-view
opponent."

Tim Bradley Calls Out
Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather
By Lem Satterfield, AOL Fan House
WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) king Tim Bradley has
transformed from a soft-talking prospect, to a trash-talking
fighter considered by many to be among boxing's premiere boxers,
pound-for-pound.
"I'm at the point where I know who I am, and that I'm not going
to let anybody just disrespect me. I'm going to talk. I know
that I'm capable in the ring. I know that I'm a good fighter. I
know that I'm an elite fighter," said Bradley, who is 25-0 with
11 knockouts.
"So when you hear me talking, I'm just being myself," said
Bradley. "I'm a man, you know? And if you say something bad
about me, I'll say something bad about you. I've set boundries.

Big Gary Shaw's boat floats:

certain quarters.
But Big Gary Shaw, who nimbly walks the narrow path in selling
fights and fighters to both Showtime and HBO, is not
complaining.
Shaw wonders aloud why more people aren't buying established

Dawson vs Bute is The Plan;
Perez-Agbeko Part 2 Ordered
By Rick Reeno -
Boxingscene.com
Promoter Gary Shaw advised BoxingScene.com that he would like
match IBO light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson against Lucian
Bute, the IBF champion at 168-pounds, and giving Bute the
homefield advantage of the Bell Centre in Montreal is not a
problem.
Dawson has a big fight ahead on August 14 against WBC champion
Jean Pascal. Shaw is very confident with Dawson's ability to win
the fight. Considering that most of the big names at super
middleweight are secured by Showtime in the Super Six
tournament, Dawson could become a realistic possibility for Bute.

Plenty of intrigue in boxing's 140-pound class
By Santo A. Perez -
Miami Herald
Strengthened by the presence of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny
Pacquiao, few can argue that the welterweight division has
become the sport's top weight class.
In the past two years, with Mayweather or Pacquiao headlining,
the division has featured appealing and profitable bouts.
Established world champions such as Paul Williams, Shane Mosley,
Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto added to the attraction.
The division will continue to remain significant, especially if
Mayweather and Pacquiao agree to fight, but boxing could feature
a similarly intriguing talent pool in the 140-pound
junior-welterweight class. Click Here For More

A 140-Pound Tournament in Works?
By Lem Satterfield - boxing fanhouse
Wouldn't you like to see a junior welterweight (140 pounds)
tournament featuring IBF and WBC titlist Devon Alexander, WBO
king Tim Bradley (pictured at right), WBA belt holder Amir Khan
and WBA and WBO lightweight (135 pounds) champ Juan Manuel
Marquez?
If yes, then you're not alone, because so would Bradley's
promoter, Gary Shaw.
In fact, Shaw claims that he proposed such an event,
face-to-face, recently to officials at the New York's offices of
HBO, which has all four of the champions under contract.
According to his plan, Shaw said that the matchups would be
determined lottery style -- drawn by the fighters from a hat or
from a box.

Alfredo Angulo
Interview
By Barb Pinella - Pound4Pound.com
I made the drive to Commerce, California to spend some time with
the holder of the Interim WBO Light Heavyweight Title, Alfredo
“Perro” Angulo. Twice I had seen him fight in person and really
enjoyed his no-nonsense and aggressive style. I decided I wanted
to know more about this man. I had several people ask me about
his nickname and where it came from, and felt that besides
serious questions, there was no time like the present to find
that out, as well as some other trivia.
“My nickname came from the Mexican Selections for the Olympic
Team” he explained. (Angulo participated in the 2004 Summer
Olympic Games for Mexico.) “This was because of the fact that I
was not scared of anybody – Russians, Europeans, I was, and am,
never scared. It is like in the dog fights; I go forward and
never go back.”

Rafael Marquez's
goal is to tie score with Israel Vazquez
By Keith Idec
Their three unforgettable battles took so much out of Israel
Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, you can’t help but wonder if either
fighter has enough left to produce a fourth fantastic fight
Saturday night in Los Angeles.
The brutal nature of their trilogy was the primary reason it
took so long to schedule Vazquez-Marquez IV. The fighters and
their handlers weren’t sure they could withstand another
grueling slugfest after their third fight more than two years
ago.
Since winning a split decision March 1, 2008, in Los Angeles,
Vazquez has undergone three surgeries to repair a detached
retina in his right eye. Vazquez (44-4, 32 KOs) has fought just
once since he beat Marquez (38-5, 34 KOs) in their 12-round
rubber match, and he had considerable difficulty before he
knocked out Colombian journeyman Angel Priolo (30-8, 20 KOs) in
the ninth round Oct. 10 in Los Angeles.

Motivation abounds
as rivalry hits round four
By Kevin Iole - Yahoo
You could ask 100 boxing experts to name the most important
attribute a fighter needs to be successful.
You’d probably hear such diverse answers as punching power, fast
hands, quick feet, a good chin and plenty of courage.
All of them are good answers, but none of them is the answer.
By Mark Whicker - OC Register
The whole point of a boxing match is to prove something that
needn't be proven again.
You and me. Who's the best? At the end of 12 rounds or a
referee's count-out, there shouldn't be a question. If further
research is needed, check out the worst-looking face.
Not a soul who sat in MGM Grand Garden Arena three weeks ago has
any reason to demand that Shane Mosley try to fight Floyd
Mayweather Jr. again. All those questions were answered.
That is why Israel Vazquez's third rematch with Rafael Marquez,
in Staples Center on Saturday night, has boxing experts
straining for historical parallels.

Boxing champion
Yonnhy Perez is not far removed from impoverished

Yonnhy Perez is a world boxing champion, but there are no plans
for HBO's "24/7" film crew to follow him. The wads of cash and
lavish luxury cars that fellow unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. are
inconceivable.
That's boxing's other world.
When Perez, 31, trains in the U.S., he lives in the den of his
trainer's parents' home in Santa Fe Springs. He doesn't own a
car. He will make $50,000 for his first International Boxing
Federation bantamweight title defense Saturday against unbeaten
prospect Abner Mares at Staples Center, and he will send most of
the money home to his native Colombia so his wife, two young
boys, parents, grandmother and his original boxing trainer can
divvy it up.

punishment. Vazquez holds the upper hand for the moment, having
won two of three.
In extending a personal rivalry that is becoming the stuff of
legend, Vazquez-Marquez will cease to exist as one of the great
ring trilogies, a distinction the series shared with, among
others, Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier, Tony Zale-Rocky Graziano,
Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward and Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield. But
it joins an even more exclusive club, that reserved for fighters
who have squared off four times or more with memorable results.
That would include Beau Jack-Bob Montgomery, Jack-Ike Williams,
Sandy Saddler-Willie Pep, Jersey Joe Walcott-Ezzard Charles and,
most recently, Azumah Nelson-Jesse James Leija, who fought four
times from 1993 to '96.

“Once & Four All”
Teleconference
Yonnhy Perez vs. Abner Mares
By Barbara Pinnella - Pound4Pound.com
Yesterday, Tuesday May 11th, was the media conference call for
the big fight night at Staples Center on May 22 titled, “Once &
Four All”. Four fighters were featured, Yonnhy Perez and Abner
Mares, and the two that are involved in the main event, Israel
Vasquez and Rafael Marquez. Here are the highlights of that
call.
Promoter for Perez, Gary Shaw, started off by saying that “This
is what boxing is all about. A strong card all the way through,
not just one fight.” He pointed out however that neither fighter
would have chosen this fight, since they are good friends. They
have faced each other three times when they were amateurs.

Boxing can copy
MMA's formula
By
Ed Graney - Las Vegas Review Journal
Gary Shaw is certain of it. He thinks boxing still has it over
mixed martial arts in one specific way. He has no doubt that
when a megafight occurs, when a Manny Pacquiao steps into a ring
and faces a Ricky Hatton, when so many movie stars show up that
Denzel Washington is relegated to the 15th row, when the lights
are blinding and the buzz deafening, the advantage still falls
to boxing.
"On its best day, MMA can't match the glamour of a huge boxing
event," Shaw said.
What about all the other days?
"They're kicking our ass."
Shaw knows both sides. He is president of Gary Shaw Productions
and began his career in boxing as inspector for the New Jersey
Athletic Control Commission. He was once chief operating officer

No-Shows Presser
Over Event Treatment
By Rick Reeno -
boxingscene.com
A few eyebrows were raised when junior middleweight contender
Alfredo Angulo no-showed Monday's final press conference to
promote this weekend's HBO televised doubleheader at the
Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Angulo is
apparently upset over the treatment he's received during the
promotion. He feels the entire promotion was completely focused
on the main event collision between heavyweights Tomasz Adamek
and Chris Arreola, and absolutely no attention was given to his
co-feature with Joel Julio.
BoxingScene.com reached out to Angulo's promoter, Gary Shaw, to
get a better read on what's going on.
"He doesn't feel like he's part of this promotion. HBO promised
that Angulo would be a very important part of this promotion,
and he's not and and he knows it. They had an initial press
conference and he wasn't invited and they had two conference
calls and he wasn't invited to participate. He was told that if
he gave up his own "Boxing After Dark" to team up with Arreola,
it would be like a co-promotion, but instead it's nothing," Shaw
told BoxingScene.com. Click Here For More

Andre Dirrell will

An old friend paid Flint’s Andre Dirrell a visit prior to his

That friend, fellow boxer Andre Ward, was a teammate (and gold

“He was getting me ready, helping me get my mind right,” said

TSS Tells You Who

Like a lot of people who find themselves trapped there in
unwanted circumstances, Arthur Abraham was looking for a way out
of Detroit Saturday night. He found one when Andre Dirrell
suddenly went from standing 6-foot-2 to 3-foot-2 without Abraham

At least that’s his story and he’s sticking to it.
Referee Laurence Cole managed to get one thing right Saturday

defenseless on his knees after slipping to the canvas in the

The Real Deal In
Detroit:
Of Cole's Conduct, And Sour Krauts
By George Kimball
DETROIT --- Has anybody else noticed how often the bravest guys
in the aftermath of these skirmishes turn out to be the
non-combatants?
Or, put another way, do you suppose Anthony Dirrell knows -- or
cares -- how close he came to turning the result of Saturday
night’s fight at Joe Louis Arena into a double-disqualification?
Andre Dirrell was still twitching on on the canvas in the blue
corner when, amid a total breakdown of security, several members
of the American boxer’s posse came bounding through the ropes
and across the ring. On one hand, it might be understandable
that Anthony would be so alarmed that he wanted to immediately
ascertain his brother’s condition, even though in doing so he
was issuing an open invitation to Laurence Cole to invoke a
second disqualification. Click Here For More

No, it’s not that he was knocked out by Donaire in 2007, the
Armenian-born brawler’s first of two losses. Darchinyan seems to
have accepted that. What angers him is that he believes Donaire
doesn’t want a rematch -- in part because Donaire scheduled a
fight in May -- and that his conqueror is perceived by some as
one of the best fighters in the world.
As his promoter, Gary Shaw, put it: “He has only one fight

Shaw Reacts To Arum
Comments:
"Liar Liar Pants On Fire"
By William Trillo -
Pound4Pound.com
Okay, promoter Gary Shaw didn't actually run with the "pants on
fire", but make no bones about it, he did make it perfectly
clear that in his opinion Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was being
far less than truthful when he commented in a report today that
quoted Arum about contract negotiations for a Super Welterweight
battle between Timothy Bradley vs. Edwin Valero. Arum's claim is
Shaw never gave him a concrete number on how much Valero would
get paid. Said Arum, "We couldn't wait forever. I asked Gary how
much Valero would get and I never heard back on a number, so we
thought they was playing around. My kid can't sit around and
wait. He wants to go out there and fight and he wants to know
how much he's getting paid."
Shaw contacted Pound4Pound shortly after the article was posted
to give us his thoughts on Arum's statement that he directed in
the Top Rank promoter:
Arum is a Liar. He lied before, He lied yesterday, and he is

Lamont Peterson Will
Kick
Edwin Valero's Ass, Says Shaw
By Rick Reeno -
boxingscene.com
Promoter Gary Shaw was very upset after reading
BoxingScene.com's recent posting on a possible fight between
Edwin Valero and Lamont Peterson. Two weeks back, Valero pulled
out a dominating TKO win over Antonio DeMarco. Following that
win, Valero announced his plan to move to the junior
welterweight division.
Valero's promoter, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, reached out to Shaw
for a possible meeting with WBO champion Timothy Bradley. Shaw
spoke to Bradley's team and received their blessing to make the
fight. He then spoke with Showtime and received their blessing
to make the fight. After he lined everything up, Shaw says the
negotiations went completely cold.
"I just read something that really bothers me. They [Top Rank]
came up to me and said they wanted Valero. I agreed, I got
Showtime to agree. Everyone wanted to go to Mexico and then Top
Rank's phones went dead," Shaw told BoxingScene.com. Click Here For More
Tim Bradley’s Search
Continues For a June Opponent
By Jake Donovan - boxingscene.com
Sometimes it’s good to be the king. Other times, it’s simply
lonely at the top.
The latter is proven to be the harsh reality in the world of 140
lb. king Timothy Bradley, who a week ago appeared set to line up
his next foe, one whose handlers specifically asked for him by
name.
Current lightweight Edwin Valero was thought to be next in line,
if you were to believe the actions of his handlers mere moments
after his dominant ninth round stoppage of Antonio DeMarco
earlier this month on Showtime.
Immediately after the bout, Shaw was approached by Fernando
Beltran, the show’s co-promoter who arrived with Valero in tow,
expressing their interest in a fight with Bradley. Click Here For More
Will Edwin
Valero-Tim Bradley Happen? Let's Hope So
By Lem Satterfield - boxing fanhouse
Not much time had passed since promoter, Gary Shaw, had watched
one of his premiere fighters, Antonio DeMarco, of Mexico, fail
to come out for the 10th round of Saturday night's bid to
dethrone WBC lightweight (135) champion, Edwin Valero, of
Venezuela, when an official from Valero's promoter, Top Rank,
approached Shaw with the prospect of pitting Valero against
another of his star boxers.
That fighter is 26-year-old WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds)
titlist, Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs), of Palm Springs,
Calif., a slick boxer who is coming off of December's one-sided,

Will Valero Weather
“The Desert Storm”?

fights being made in the junior welterweight division. Fights

who not only holds the WBO version of the title, but is the

It seems that everyone is running into “The Desert

Schaefer Over Angulo vs. Lara
By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
Shortly after posting Richard Schaefer's comments regarding
Alfredo Angulo's refusal to fight Erislandy Lara,
BoxingScene.com received an angry call from Angulo's promoter
Gary Shaw. Speaking with BoxingScene on Tuesday, Schaefer, the
CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, said he tried his best to match
Lara with Angulo, but the Mexican slugger had no interest in the
fight.
Shaw took offense to Schaefer's comments. He doesn't deny
Angulo's lack of interest in the fight. According to Shaw, Lara
is not at the level, in terms of exposure and name value, to
interest Angulo. Shaw took aim at Schaefer over the failed
negotiations to match WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy

Bradley: "Valero, We'll Fight Anybody"

BoxingScene.com spoke with Cameron Dunkin, the manager for
unbeaten WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, to
get the latest on a possible fight with WBC lightweight champ
Edwin Valero, who plans to move up to 140-pounds. Valero's
promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank told BoxingScene on Sunday that
Bradley is a target opponent for them at 140.
Dunkin and Bradley's promoter, Gary Shaw, have discussed the
potential Bradley-Valero fight. Bradley is willing to fight any
boxer as long as it makes sense. At the moment there has been no
offer on the table from Valero's side. If the fight comes
together, Showtime will televise. Valero suffered a nasty gash
on the right side of his head during last Saturday's win over
Antonio DeMarco. There is no information at the moment on how
long that injury will take to fully heal or when Valero can
return to the gym. Valero is also having a problem obtaining a

Timothy Bradley’s Promoter: “Amir Khan is a Fraud!”

Shaw, who had a lot to say after reading our story on the

A few weeks ago, Shaw was negotiating with Khan’s former

Khan signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Shaw was

Antonio DeMarco, the Tijuana Tough Guy
By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
When it comes to Antonio DeMarco, who challenges for the WBC
lightweight title this Saturday night in Monterrey, Mexico
(Showtime 9 PM, ET/PT), looks can be deceiving. His rather frail
body looks as though a stiff breeze could knock him over. He’s
got the arms the size of Olive Oyl, yet he packs a pretty stiff
punch. DeMarco’s also a nice guy. And you know where Leo
Durocher thought those guys ended up.
But you shouldn’t judge this book by its cover.
"He’s a very, very calm individual with a lot of
self-confidence," says his promoter Gary Shaw, "and I guess,
when you look at Tony DeMarco and his physique and everything

Timothy Bradley stuck and moved his way past Lamont Peterson to
retain the WBO 140 lb. championship at a sold out Agua Caliente
Casino, Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, CA. Non-stop movement was
not Bradley’s original game plan, but became plan B at the
insistence of his corner. “The game plan was to take it to him,
but he decided to take it to me”, explained Bradley of the
change in tactics midway through the contest.
Bradley, of nearby Palm Springs, CA, found a home for his right
hand early in the second. Bradley (25-0) landed the punch
repeatedly in a round he won decisively. An overhand right
dropped Peterson early in the third, setting the stage for a
tremendous round of boxing. “I planned to win the first four
rounds big”, said Peterson. “But when I went down in the third
it was time to fight.” For the remainder of the round the
combatants fought toe-to-toe exchanging vicious body blows.
Peterson (27-1) continued the body assault in the fourth to win
the round. “He made me fight”, said Bradley. “He made me do
things in there I normally don’t do.” Click Here For More

It’s not clear who had a worse Thanksgiving weekend, Ali Funeka,
who got the shaft from the judges in his fight for the vacant
IBF lightweight title against Joan Guzman, or Tiger Woods who
might have gotten the shaft of a sand wedge from his irate wife.
"Well, I would say Tiger because Ali didn’t get hit with
anything," said Gary Shaw, who promotes the lanky South African.
And he has a point, hey, it’s not like Funeka was ever laid out,
needing medical attention.
But on a serious note, the scorecards rendered by judges Alan
Davis and Benoit Russell, who both had the fight a dead even
draw at 114-114( while Joseph Pasquale had Funeka winning big at
116-112) is the runaway choice as the worst decision of 2009.
There is nary a soul who believes that Funeka did not win this
fight handily. Click Here For More
What now for Hopkins? Maybe Dawson
By Dan Rafael -
espn.com
Chad Dawson, the young light heavyweight star, has been calling
out Bernard Hopkins for ages, but Hopkins didn't have a lot of
interest in fighting him. And who could blame Hopkins, with a
potential big-money rematch against Roy Jones Jr. on the table
for early 2010?
However, that was until Jones got knocked out by Danny Green in
the first round Wednesday in Australia, hopefully bringing
Jones' great career to a close once and for all.
Hopkins will attend to his business Wednesday night against
Enrique Ornelas, but there won't be a fight with Jones now. Click Here For More
Chad Dawson Calls Out Bernard Hopkins
By Lem Satterfield
Outside of the ropes, it takes a lot to get Chad Dawson riled
up.
"Chad Dawson is one of the best fighters in the world, and he
shows it every time that he goes into the ring," said Dawson's
promoter, Gary Shaw. "It's just not Chad's style to talk smack
or to call people out."
But that changed on Wednesday morning, after Dawson discovered
that Roy Jones was stopped in the first round, likely scuttling
a proposed, megabout with Bernard Hopkins -- a man Dawson has
long targeted as an opponent. Click Here For More
Funeka robbery can't be swept under the rug
By Dan Rafael -
espn.com
Bad decisions don't happen just in the United States and
Germany. You can add Canada to the list.
Lightweight Ali Funeka dominated Joan Guzman so severely that
the reading of the scorecards at the end of 12 mostly one-sided
rounds appeared to be a mere formality on Saturday night at
Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City.
Gary Shaw, who co-promotes Funeka with Cedric Kushner, was
inside the ring after the final bell with a huge smile on his
face, congratulating his man on what appeared clear as day --
that Funeka would win a unanimous decision and a vacant
lightweight belt in his second shot at a 135-pound title. Click Here For More
Gary Shaw speaks about the controversial
Funeka-Guzman decision
By
Geoffrey Ciani - eastsideboxing.com
At the conclusion of Saturday night’s fight between Ali Funeka
and Joan Guzman, the verdict seemed pretty clear—Ali Funeka won
the fight. This was not an especially difficult fight to score.
Funeka won, and he should have been awarded the vacant IBF
lightweight title. To the astonishment of those in attendance
and those watching around the world, the fight was inexplicably
ruled a draw. I had a chance to speak with promoter Gary Shaw
after the fight, and here is what he had to say:

Funeka beats up Guzman....but only gets a draw
El Paso Times
In the wake of Manny Pacquiao's demolition of Miguel Cotto - and
some very real signs that boxing is emerging from a decades-long
stupor - things have been looking pretty positive for the sweet
science lately.
Leave it to a bad decision to remind us how boxing sank so low
in the first place.
Despite outpunching and outslugging Joan Guzman in a battle for
the vacant IBF lightweight title, Ali Funeka came away with only
a draw to show for it Saturday in Quebec City, Canada. It was
easily the most impressive performance of Funeka's career, as
the South African put a hurtin' on the smaller Guzman early,
ripping the native Dominican with every punch in the manual:
jabs, right hands, left hooks and uppercuts.

Gary Shaw and The Canadian Heist
Jerry Glick - secondsout.com
HBO had a great show on Saturday night that was marred by yet
another bad decision. This time it was a draw between unbeaten
former two division champion Joan Guzman and Ali Funeka at the
Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Québec, Canada. While a draw may
sound fair enough it clearly was not as Funeka, looking like a
cross between Tommy Hearns and Paul Williams appeared to control
the ring almost completely after the first two or three rounds.
After a few rounds Guzman’s face was a mask of blood that came
from his nose and a cut. Once the long and lean Funeka got
untracked it was almost all his fight to dominate.
I spoke to Funeka’s promoter Gary Shaw the next day and he was
ready to fight everyone in sight who he believed screwed his
charge.

they've been answered.
Dawson had won their initial meeting via unanimous decision,

Dawson Makes Johnson Look His Age
With Near Shutout Unanimous Decision
Pound4Pound.com
Chad Dawson (now 29-0-0-1, 17 KO's) won a
much easier fight with Glen Johnson than their first encounter,
with a unanimous decision. Although two judges had it much too
close (one round from being a draw), the reality was Johnson won
about 2 rounds at most.
From the opening round, Dawson used his height, reach, and
movement to land and move. That's how the majority of the fight
went. Johnson's pressure wasn't the same as any of his previous
fights, but one is to question whether his age has finally
caught up with him, or was it Dawson's technique that caused the
confusion.Click Here For More
Angulo Obliterates Yorgey In 3,
Candidate For KO Of The Year
Pound4Pound.com
Alfredo Angulo (now 17-1, 14 KO's) scored a
more than impressive knockout over the previously undefeated,
but untested, Harry Joe Yorgey in just 3 rounds. Angulo came out
strong once the bell rang as Yorgey's plan was to move and box.
Angulo pressured Yorgey to fight off the ropes, but Yorgey
seemed to back himself there and into the corner often.
In round 2, a huge right hand stopped Yorgey in his tracks and
momentarily knocked him unconscious while standing. Yorgey
regained his senses before falling to the canvas, but was
finally dropped moments later with another big right hand. Up on
shaky legs, Yorgey was staggered around the ring as Angulo began
beating him to a pulp. Yorgey miraculously made it out of the
round, staggering to his corner.Click Here For More

Perez dethrones Agbeko in scorcher

something Showtime is aware of since it was featuring Agbeko for
the third time in his past four bouts. This was a terrific
action fight from start to finish and should be among the
honorable mentions when it comes time to assess the best fights
of the year. It sure was a sensational way for casino magnate

One Win Away from Becoming a Breakout Star

One of the great things about boxing is that you never know from
where the next great fighter will emerge. In many of today’s
mainstream sports, “the next big thing” has been hyped since
they laced up their cleats or athletic shoes for their high
school. In boxing, a poor kid that barely owned a pair of shoes
as a fifteen-year-old can become star with a ton of hard work

Gary Shaw: Abraham-Dirrell Staying In The USA

first time on the big stage. He showed he could fight 12 rounds,
and he showed he could really fight during the championship
rounds. I felt we won the fight by a round. I don't think the
point deduction was warranted, but it was a dirty fight on
Froch's part, with a lot of hitting behind the head,
continuously, even throwing him down in the 5th round. Judges
need to score, in my book, not on style, but on effective blows.
