Fans want Pacquiao to take on Bradley

By DAVID A. AVILA, The Press-Enterprise
A recent survey revealed boxing's reigning pound-for-pound champion, Manny Pacquiao, should fight Timothy Bradley next.

Hardcore boxing fans, or at least the majority of those voting on the survey, do not want Floyd Mayweather Jr., Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto matched against the Filipino super star. Instead most like what they see in a matchup between two pint-sized destroyers, Bradley and Pacquiao.

Bradley is hedging his bets.

"I want to fight the best fighters in the world. Manny Pacquiao or even Floyd Mayweather," said Bradley (26-0, 11 KOs) during a press conference on Saturday following his unanimous decision over welterweight slugger Luis Carlos Abregu. Click Here For More

Amir Khan says he'd fight Timothy Bradley

By Leighton Ginn, The Desert Sun
RANCHO MIRAGE — WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan of Great Britain said he would relish the chance to fight Timothy Bradley, as it was reported on the Daily Mirror, a British tabloid.

“I'll fight Tim Bradley. It's the first time he's called me out,” Khan was quoted in the story. “I'm going to Vegas and I'll talk to Golden Boy (his promoters). I would love the fight. Good style for me. I'm fighting Timothy Bradley next. I'm gonna tell Golden Boy. Let's see if they want it for real. Talk is cheap.”

Gary Shaw, Bradley's promoters, have said they had a fight with Khan set up for the first part of the year, but it fell apart when Khan signed with Golden Boy.

Bradley Believable Welter; Angulo Wreaks Havoc

By Roy & Marlene Marquez - Pound4Pound.com
Fighting for the first time as a welterweight since 2006, Timothy Bradley boxed and banged his way to a convincing twelve round decision over Argentine Luis Carlos Abregu before a packed house at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA. “You got to be a risk taker if you want to go somewhere in life and I’m a risk taker”, explained Bradley in stepping up to take on this challenge.

In a clash of undefeated fighters, Abregu climbed between the ropes the #5 rated welterweight in the world. Bradley entered the ring the reigning, but not defending, WBO Jr. Welterweight Champion and quickly sustained a cut in the first round following an accidental clash of heads. Increasingly aggressive in round two, Bradley raked Abregu with a straight right that wobbled the Argentine’s legs.  Click Here For More

Dawson 30 Day Weigh-In Quotes

Chad Dawson weighed 177 lbs. today.

CHAD DAWSON: I cannot wait until August 14 when I face Jean Pascal in Montreal for the title I vacated in order to beat Antonio Tarver ... twice. Now it's time to reclaim my original crown and bring it home to the U.S.

GARY SHAW: Chad is ready to unify the WBC light heavyweight title and become The Ring's lineal 175-pound world champion, joining the elite company which includes Billy Conn, Archie Moore and Bob Foster. My concern isn't that Chad wins the fight, it's how much the airline will charge us for the additional luggage for carrying the world championship belt back.

"Undefeated Hopefuls Are Fighting for Recognition"

By Bob Velin, USA TODAY
The biggest and most anticipated fight in boxing is Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather. What could be the highest-grossing fight of all time doesn't look like it will happen this year, however, as Pacquiao's representative, Top Rank, has given Mayweather until Friday to decide if he wants to fight Pacquiao on Nov. 13. Mayweather has given no indication he wants to fight again in 2010.

A couple of levels down but high on the best-of-the-rest board is the super middleweight showdown of the Olympic Andres — 19-1 Dirrell vs. 22-0 Ward — good friends and 2004 medalist teammates who are tentatively scheduled to meet Sept. 25 in the third round of Showtime's Super Six World Classic.

Hudson Takes “Perro” for a Walk

By Steve Kim - maxboxing
In May of 2009, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo suffered his first professional loss against Kermit Cintron, who, despite being better known as a puncher, boxed and moved his way to a 12-round unanimous decision by scores of 116-112 across the board. Versus the lateral movement of Cintron, for much of the night, Angulo’s attempts to corral his foe were as futile as a dog chasing its own tail.

The book was out on Angulo: move, move and move some more on the heavy-handed Mexican.

From this point forward, anyone who faces “Perro” would employ this strategy, which could prove to be a bit of a problem in a division that boasts the likes of Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez, Sergiy Dzinziruk, Yuri Foreman and Vanes Martirosyan, among others. Simply put, fighters who are more athletic than Angulo.

Bradley believes he can
draw fans if he fights Pacquiao

By Robert Morales, Press Telegram
Not only is Timothy Bradley one of the better pound-for-pound fighters in the game today, he's also one of the most respected. It would be difficult to find one person in the industry with anything negative to say about the overall character of the man.

But that doesn't mean Bradley won't take a stand when his worth is challenged like it was recently when promoter Bob Arum said Bradley would not be considered for a fight with Manny Pacquiao.

"Bradley is an excellent fighter, but nobody's ever heard of him," said Arum, Pacquiao's promoter. "Very few people have heard of him. It has nothing to do with his abilities. He's a very able guy. But he hasn't been promoted so that he's like a household name where he could be a viable pay-per-view opponent."

Tim Bradley Calls Out
Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather

By Lem Satterfield, AOL Fan House
WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) king Tim Bradley has transformed from a soft-talking prospect, to a trash-talking fighter considered by many to be among boxing's premiere boxers, pound-for-pound.

"I'm at the point where I know who I am, and that I'm not going to let anybody just disrespect me. I'm going to talk. I know that I'm capable in the ring. I know that I'm a good fighter. I know that I'm an elite fighter," said Bradley, who is 25-0 with 11 knockouts.

"So when you hear me talking, I'm just being myself," said Bradley. "I'm a man, you know? And if you say something bad about me, I'll say something bad about you. I've set boundries. I'm not going to let anyone run all over me."

Big Gary Shaw's boat floats:
Oscar De La Hoya will fight again

By Michael Marley
Like all businesses and industries, boxing is withering in certain quarters.

But Big Gary Shaw, who nimbly walks the narrow path in selling fights and fighters to both Showtime and HBO, is not complaining.

Shaw wonders aloud why more people aren't buying established promotional outfits and notes the increased amount of co-promotional work promoters are doing with each other.

He can't understand how any promoter can think they will stay afloat without precious TV funding. Click Here For More

Dawson vs Bute is The Plan;
Perez-Agbeko Part 2 Ordered

By Rick Reeno - Boxingscene.com
Promoter Gary Shaw advised BoxingScene.com that he would like match IBO light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson against Lucian Bute, the IBF champion at 168-pounds, and giving Bute the homefield advantage of the Bell Centre in Montreal is not a problem.

Dawson has a big fight ahead on August 14 against WBC champion Jean Pascal. Shaw is very confident with Dawson's ability to win the fight. Considering that most of the big names at super middleweight are secured by Showtime in the Super Six tournament, Dawson could become a realistic possibility for Bute. Click Here For More

Shaw: Abraham Stops Froch;
Dirrell-Ward Still a Mystery

By Rick Reeno - Boxingscene.com
BoxingScene.com spoke to promoter Gary Shaw about the third stage bouts in Showtime's Super Six tournament. The fight between Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch has yet to be finalized, but Shaw predicts a knockout win for Abraham when it actually takes place.

"Abraham will knock Froch out. Mikkel Kessler don't hit like Arthur Abraham," Shaw said.

The sides for Froch and Abraham have not finalized an agreement on where their fight will take place. The same situation stands true for Andre Dirrell vs. Andre Ward, set for the tentative date of September 25. Showtime wants to place Kessler vs. Allan Green on the same date to create a televised doubleheader. Click Here For More

HBO junior welterweight tournament on hold for now

By Bob Velin, USA TODAY
Junior welterweight (140 pounds) is one of boxing's most competitive weight divisions, featuring the likes of undefeated champion Tim Bradley, up-and-coming superstars Devon Alexander and Amir Khan, as well as Juan Urango and Marcos Maidana, not to mention pound-for-pound king/congressman Manny Pacquiao, who has moved up to 147 pounds for now.

HBO wanted to take advantage of such talent and Ross Greenburg, the network's sports boss, threw open the idea of putting the cream of the 140-pound crop in a tournament to determine a champion. Click Here For More

Promoter 'Nervous' About
Tim Bradley-Luis Carlos Abregu

By Lem Satterfield - boxing fanhouse
Gary Shaw has a hand in promoting both WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion Tim Bradley (pictured above, at left), of Palm Springs, Calif., and unheralded welterweight (147 pounds) Luis Carlos Abregu of Salta Salta, Argentina, heading into their July 17, HBO-televised, non-title over the limit bout that is slated for the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

As such, Shaw said that he is "nervous" concerning the result.

But the promoter also claims that he has no regrets in scheduling the fight, even though the relatively unknown Abregu (29-0, 23 knockouts) has the potential to knock off Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs), a man who is widely considered to be the world's premiere 140-pounder.

Plenty of intrigue in boxing's 140-pound class

By Santo A. Perez - Miami Herald
Strengthened by the presence of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, few can argue that the welterweight division has become the sport's top weight class.

In the past two years, with Mayweather or Pacquiao headlining, the division has featured appealing and profitable bouts. Established world champions such as Paul Williams, Shane Mosley, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto added to the attraction.

The division will continue to remain significant, especially if Mayweather and Pacquiao agree to fight, but boxing could feature a similarly intriguing talent pool in the 140-pound junior-welterweight class.  Click Here For More

Bradley joins welterweight mix

By Steve Carp - Las Vegas Review Journal
Unbeaten Timothy Bradley is a junior welterweight star, but welterweight is where the money is.

That’s part of the reason he’s going back to 147 pounds, perhaps for good, to fight Luis Carlos Abregu on HBO on July 17 at Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Bradley’s scheduled 140-pound fight against Marcos Maidana fell through for shadowy reasons, giving Bradley (25-0, 11 knockouts) an opportunity to wade back into the welterweight division. Click Here For More

Tim Bradley Calls Out Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Others

By Lem Satterfield - boxing fanhouse
Unbeaten WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion, Timothy Bradley, wants "a big fight," whether it be against welterweight (147 pounds) titlists, Manny Pacquiao, or, Andre Berto, of the WBO and WBC, respectively, or WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) king, Miguel Cotto.

Bradley would even like to face former three-time world champion, Paul Williams, a nearly 6-foot-3 fighter who has campaigned as a welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight (160 pounds).

"I'm coming down right now in weight. I went up to about 165 pounds, and now I'm tearing it down to 147 pounds. Right now, I'm about 155. I've been training for about four weeks now. I'm feeling great," said Bradley, who is sparring with middleweights and above.

A 140-Pound Tournament in Works?

By Lem Satterfield - boxing fanhouse
Wouldn't you like to see a junior welterweight (140 pounds) tournament featuring IBF and WBC titlist Devon Alexander, WBO king Tim Bradley (pictured at right), WBA belt holder Amir Khan and WBA and WBO lightweight (135 pounds) champ Juan Manuel Marquez?

If yes, then you're not alone, because so would Bradley's promoter, Gary Shaw.

In fact, Shaw claims that he proposed such an event, face-to-face, recently to officials at the New York's offices of HBO, which has all four of the champions under contract.

According to his plan, Shaw said that the matchups would be determined lottery style -- drawn by the fighters from a hat or from a box.

Alfredo Angulo Interview

By Barb Pinella - Pound4Pound.com
I made the drive to Commerce, California to spend some time with the holder of the Interim WBO Light Heavyweight Title, Alfredo “Perro” Angulo. Twice I had seen him fight in person and really enjoyed his no-nonsense and aggressive style. I decided I wanted to know more about this man. I had several people ask me about his nickname and where it came from, and felt that besides serious questions, there was no time like the present to find that out, as well as some other trivia.

“My nickname came from the Mexican Selections for the Olympic Team” he explained. (Angulo participated in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games for Mexico.) “This was because of the fact that I was not scared of anybody – Russians, Europeans, I was, and am, never scared. It is like in the dog fights; I go forward and never go back.”

Rafael Marquez's goal is to tie score with Israel Vazquez

By Keith Idec
Their three unforgettable battles took so much out of Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, you can’t help but wonder if either fighter has enough left to produce a fourth fantastic fight Saturday night in Los Angeles.

The brutal nature of their trilogy was the primary reason it took so long to schedule Vazquez-Marquez IV. The fighters and their handlers weren’t sure they could withstand another grueling slugfest after their third fight more than two years ago.

Since winning a split decision March 1, 2008, in Los Angeles, Vazquez has undergone three surgeries to repair a detached retina in his right eye. Vazquez (44-4, 32 KOs) has fought just once since he beat Marquez (38-5, 34 KOs) in their 12-round rubber match, and he had considerable difficulty before he knocked out Colombian journeyman Angel Priolo (30-8, 20 KOs) in the ninth round Oct. 10 in Los Angeles.

Motivation abounds as rivalry hits round four

By Kevin Iole - Yahoo
You could ask 100 boxing experts to name the most important attribute a fighter needs to be successful.

You’d probably hear such diverse answers as punching power, fast hands, quick feet, a good chin and plenty of courage.

All of them are good answers, but none of them is the answer.

They’re all wrong. Dead wrong.

Vazquez-Marquez 4 a sequel worth watching

By Mark Whicker - OC Register
The whole point of a boxing match is to prove something that needn't be proven again.

You and me. Who's the best? At the end of 12 rounds or a referee's count-out, there shouldn't be a question. If further research is needed, check out the worst-looking face.

Not a soul who sat in MGM Grand Garden Arena three weeks ago has any reason to demand that Shane Mosley try to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. again. All those questions were answered.

That is why Israel Vazquez's third rematch with Rafael Marquez, in Staples Center on Saturday night, has boxing experts straining for historical parallels.

Boxing champion Yonnhy Perez is not far removed from impoverished roots

By Lance Pugmire - LA Times
Yonnhy Perez is a world boxing champion, but there are no plans for HBO's "24/7" film crew to follow him. The wads of cash and lavish luxury cars that fellow unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. are inconceivable.

That's boxing's other world.

When Perez, 31, trains in the U.S., he lives in the den of his trainer's parents' home in Santa Fe Springs. He doesn't own a car. He will make $50,000 for his first International Boxing Federation bantamweight title defense Saturday against unbeaten prospect Abner Mares at Staples Center, and he will send most of the money home to his native Colombia so his wife, two young boys, parents, grandmother and his original boxing trainer can divvy it up.

ISRAEL VAZQUEZ: “With the three fights we’ve already had, I think Marquez and I have already solidified our legacy. But they asked if we wanted to do it again, so of course, I said sure. Why not? If the fans want this fight, so do I.

RAFAEL MARQUEZ: “I lost the last round in the last fight basically because my (former) cornermen made a lot of mistakes. Instead of telling me to go out and fight, my instructions were to box and that cost me the fight.

ABNER MARES: “I am as good as I can be and can’t wait for Saturday. As each day passes, the excitement inside me builds. This is the first time I have been involved in a fight where there is something going on almost every day, where there is actually a fight week schedule with things for me to do.

Vazquez, Marquez set to do battle for fourth time

By Bernard Fernandez  - Philadelphia Daily News
ON SATURDAY night, Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez erase a piece of boxing history and will write another.

These two valiant Mexican fighters will hurl themselves at each other for the fourth time, no doubt thrilling on-site fans at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and a Showtime audience with their ability to dispense and absorb ridiculous amounts of punishment. Vazquez holds the upper hand for the moment, having won two of three.

In extending a personal rivalry that is becoming the stuff of legend, Vazquez-Marquez will cease to exist as one of the great ring trilogies, a distinction the series shared with, among others, Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier, Tony Zale-Rocky Graziano, Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward and Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield. But it joins an even more exclusive club, that reserved for fighters who have squared off four times or more with memorable results. That would include Beau Jack-Bob Montgomery, Jack-Ike Williams, Sandy Saddler-Willie Pep, Jersey Joe Walcott-Ezzard Charles and, most recently, Azumah Nelson-Jesse James Leija, who fought four times from 1993 to '96.

Yonnhy Perez vs. Abner Mares

By Barbara Pinnella - Pound4Pound.com
Yesterday, Tuesday May 11th, was the media conference call for the big fight night at Staples Center on May 22 titled, “Once & Four All”. Four fighters were featured, Yonnhy Perez and Abner Mares, and the two that are involved in the main event, Israel Vasquez and Rafael Marquez. Here are the highlights of that call.

Promoter for Perez, Gary Shaw, started off by saying that “This is what boxing is all about. A strong card all the way through, not just one fight.” He pointed out however that neither fighter would have chosen this fight, since they are good friends. They have faced each other three times when they were amateurs.

Boxing can copy MMA's formula

By Ed Graney - Las Vegas Review Journal
Gary Shaw is certain of it. He thinks boxing still has it over mixed martial arts in one specific way. He has no doubt that when a megafight occurs, when a Manny Pacquiao steps into a ring and faces a Ricky Hatton, when so many movie stars show up that Denzel Washington is relegated to the 15th row, when the lights are blinding and the buzz deafening, the advantage still falls to boxing.

"On its best day, MMA can't match the glamour of a huge boxing event," Shaw said.

What about all the other days?

"They're kicking our ass."

Shaw knows both sides. He is president of Gary Shaw Productions and began his career in boxing as inspector for the New Jersey Athletic Control Commission. He was once chief operating officer for Main Events.

Promoter Gary Shaw was deeply touched that his fighter, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo, had "In Loving Memory of Papi Shaw" sewn into his trunks for Saturday's fight with Joel Julio. Shaw's father passed away a few weeks ago. Shaw also revealed that Angulo left his training camp to attend the elder Shaw's funeral and to be by his promoter's side.

"No fighter has ever done that. Angulo is a special fighter but is an even more special person outside of the ring," Shaw said. The promoter and fighter share a close father-son bond that is unlike most promoter-fighter relationships.

Alfredo "Perro" Angulo stopped Joel Julio with a right cross midway through the 11th round to retain the WBO interim 154-pound title Saturday night.

Angulo (18-1, 15 KOs) dramatically ended a highly competitive fight with one perfect blow to Julio's chin, sending his Colombian opponent tumbling to the canvas. Although Julio (35-4) shakily got back up and wanted to keep fighting, referee Raul Caiz stopped the bout at 1:39 of the 11th.

"Joel never hurt me," Angulo said. "I know he has power, but it is really hard to hit Perro."

Alfredo Angulo No-Shows Presser
Over Event Treatment

By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
A few eyebrows were raised when junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo no-showed Monday's final press conference to promote this weekend's HBO televised doubleheader at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Angulo is apparently upset over the treatment he's received during the promotion. He feels the entire promotion was completely focused on the main event collision between heavyweights Tomasz Adamek and Chris Arreola, and absolutely no attention was given to his co-feature with Joel Julio.

BoxingScene.com reached out to Angulo's promoter, Gary Shaw, to get a better read on what's going on.

"He doesn't feel like he's part of this promotion. HBO promised that Angulo would be a very important part of this promotion, and he's not and and he knows it. They had an initial press conference and he wasn't invited and they had two conference calls and he wasn't invited to participate. He was told that if he gave up his own "Boxing After Dark" to team up with Arreola, it would be like a co-promotion, but instead it's nothing," Shaw told BoxingScene.com.

Andre Dirrell will face friend, former

By Bruce Gunther _ Flint Journal
An old friend paid Flint’s Andre Dirrell a visit prior to his fight Saturday night with Arthur Abraham in Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena.

That friend, fellow boxer Andre Ward, was a teammate (and gold medal winner) on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team which competed in Athens.

“He was getting me ready, helping me get my mind right,” said Dirrell. “He told me to just fight my fight, do what I do best, and don’t worry about what (Abraham) tries to do to get me off of my game.” Click Here For More

Flint fighter Andre Dirrell disappointed

TSS Tells You Who The Real Actor Is

Like a lot of people who find themselves trapped there in unwanted circumstances, Arthur Abraham was looking for a way out of Detroit Saturday night. He found one when Andre Dirrell suddenly went from standing 6-foot-2 to 3-foot-2 without Abraham seeming to notice.

At least that’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

Referee Laurence Cole managed to get one thing right Saturday night, which put him ahead of his usual performance in a big matches, when he officially disqualified the previously undefeated Abraham for cold-cocking Dirrell while he was sitting defenseless on his knees after slipping to the canvas in the 11th round of their Super Six Super Middleweight tournament fight at Joe Louis Arena. Truth be told, Abraham disqualified himself by doing exactly what he wanted to do – which was find an excuse to take back to Germany with him for the first defeat of his career. Click Here For More

The Real Deal In Detroit:
Of Cole's Conduct, And Sour Krauts

By George Kimball
DETROIT --- Has anybody else noticed how often the bravest guys in the aftermath of these skirmishes turn out to be the non-combatants?

Or, put another way, do you suppose Anthony Dirrell knows -- or cares -- how close he came to turning the result of Saturday night’s fight at Joe Louis Arena into a double-disqualification?

Andre Dirrell was still twitching on on the canvas in the blue corner when, amid a total breakdown of security, several members of the American boxer’s posse came bounding through the ropes and across the ring. On one hand, it might be understandable that Anthony would be so alarmed that he wanted to immediately ascertain his brother’s condition, even though in doing so he was issuing an open invitation to Laurence Cole to invoke a second disqualification.

If you want to get Vic Darchinyan riled, just mention Nonito Donaire.

No, it’s not that he was knocked out by Donaire in 2007, the Armenian-born brawler’s first of two losses. Darchinyan seems to have accepted that. What angers him is that he believes Donaire doesn’t want a rematch -- in part because Donaire scheduled a fight in May -- and that his conqueror is perceived by some as one of the best fighters in the world.

As his promoter, Gary Shaw, put it: “He has only one fight between his ears: Donaire.”

Big-time boxing will return to Joe Louis Arena on March 27 with Flint’s Andre (The Matrix) Dirrell fighting the main event as part of Showtime’s Super Six super middleweight tournament.

Dirrell (18-1, 13 KOs) will be matched against King Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) of Germany. The fight is scheduled to been shown at 10:30 p.m. Dirrell won the bronze medal for the U.S. at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Tim Bradley has the power

Paulie Malignaggi does not have the punch to keep the world light-welterweight champion at bay.

Rumours that Amir Khan wants to fight Tim Bradley this year are hitting the wires, and I hope they're true.

He insists the second defence of his WBA light-welterweight title against Paulie Malignaggi in New York on 15 May "is a great fight" for his American debut whereas it is a pretty good fight to prepare for someone like Bradley. Click Here For More

Shaw Reacts To Arum Comments:
"Liar Liar Pants On Fire"

By William Trillo - Pound4Pound.com
Okay, promoter Gary Shaw didn't actually run with the "pants on fire", but make no bones about it, he did make it perfectly clear that in his opinion Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was being far less than truthful when he commented in a report today that quoted Arum about contract negotiations for a Super Welterweight battle between Timothy Bradley vs. Edwin Valero. Arum's claim is Shaw never gave him a concrete number on how much Valero would get paid. Said Arum, "We couldn't wait forever. I asked Gary how much Valero would get and I never heard back on a number, so we thought they was playing around. My kid can't sit around and wait. He wants to go out there and fight and he wants to know how much he's getting paid."

Shaw contacted Pound4Pound shortly after the article was posted to give us his thoughts on Arum's statement that he directed in the Top Rank promoter:

Arum is a Liar. He lied before, He lied yesterday, and he is lying today. Click Here For More

Lamont Peterson Will Kick
Edwin Valero's Ass, Says Shaw

By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
Promoter Gary Shaw was very upset after reading BoxingScene.com's recent posting on a possible fight between Edwin Valero and Lamont Peterson. Two weeks back, Valero pulled out a dominating TKO win over Antonio DeMarco. Following that win, Valero announced his plan to move to the junior welterweight division.

Valero's promoter, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, reached out to Shaw for a possible meeting with WBO champion Timothy Bradley. Shaw spoke to Bradley's team and received their blessing to make the fight. He then spoke with Showtime and received their blessing to make the fight. After he lined everything up, Shaw says the negotiations went completely cold.

"I just read something that really bothers me. They [Top Rank] came up to me and said they wanted Valero. I agreed, I got Showtime to agree. Everyone wanted to go to Mexico and then Top Rank's phones went dead," Shaw told BoxingScene.com. Click Here For More

Tim Bradley’s Search Continues For a June Opponent

By Jake Donovan - boxingscene.com
Sometimes it’s good to be the king. Other times, it’s simply lonely at the top.

The latter is proven to be the harsh reality in the world of 140 lb. king Timothy Bradley, who a week ago appeared set to line up his next foe, one whose handlers specifically asked for him by name.

Current lightweight Edwin Valero was thought to be next in line, if you were to believe the actions of his handlers mere moments after his dominant ninth round stoppage of Antonio DeMarco earlier this month on Showtime.

Immediately after the bout, Shaw was approached by Fernando Beltran, the show’s co-promoter who arrived with Valero in tow, expressing their interest in a fight with Bradley.

Will Edwin Valero-Tim Bradley Happen? Let's Hope So

By Lem Satterfield - boxing fanhouse
Not much time had passed since promoter, Gary Shaw, had watched one of his premiere fighters, Antonio DeMarco, of Mexico, fail to come out for the 10th round of Saturday night's bid to dethrone WBC lightweight (135) champion, Edwin Valero, of Venezuela, when an official from Valero's promoter, Top Rank, approached Shaw with the prospect of pitting Valero against another of his star boxers.

That fighter is 26-year-old WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) titlist, Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif., a slick boxer who is coming off of December's one-sided, 12-round unanimous decision victory over previously unbeaten Lamont Peterson (27-1, 13 KOs) during which Bradley arguably lost only one round.

Tim Bradley, Ring Magazine's April Cover Boy

They can run, but they can't hide.

Well, at any rate, there will be few boxing fans who will be able to avoid WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion, Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 knockouts) as he graces the April 2010 cover of The Ring Magzazine.

"It's a 12-page layout on Tim," said Joe Santoliquito, Managing Editor, Ring Magazine, who authored the piece. "Tim is talking about everything from his upbringing, to the sanctioning bodies, to where he feels his future is headed."

Will Valero Weather “The Desert Storm”?

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
As you peruse the upcoming boxing schedule, you’ll see a host of fights being made in the junior welterweight division. Fights involving the likes of Amir Khan, Devon Alexander, Marcos Maidana, Victor Ortiz, Nate Campbell, Juan Urango and Victor Cayo loom. But there’s one notable omission. That’s Tim Bradley, who not only holds the WBO version of the title, but is the consensus choice as the game’s best 140-pounder.

It seems that everyone is running into “The Desert Storm”-shelter. Bradley, who hails from Palm Springs, California, is willing, ready and able to face any junior welterweight on the planet.. The problem is that the feelings don’t seem to be mutual.

Shaw Sounds Off On Schaefer Over Angulo vs. Lara

By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
Shortly after posting Richard Schaefer's comments regarding Alfredo Angulo's refusal to fight Erislandy Lara, BoxingScene.com received an angry call from Angulo's promoter Gary Shaw. Speaking with BoxingScene on Tuesday, Schaefer, the CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, said he tried his best to match Lara with Angulo, but the Mexican slugger had no interest in the fight.

Shaw took offense to Schaefer's comments. He doesn't deny Angulo's lack of interest in the fight. According to Shaw, Lara is not at the level, in terms of exposure and name value, to interest Angulo. Shaw took aim at Schaefer over the failed negotiations to match WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley against some of the top 140-pounders under the Golden Boy banner.

Team Timothy Bradley: "Valero, We'll Fight Anybody"

By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
BoxingScene.com spoke with Cameron Dunkin, the manager for unbeaten WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, to get the latest on a possible fight with WBC lightweight champ Edwin Valero, who plans to move up to 140-pounds. Valero's promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank told BoxingScene on Sunday that Bradley is a target opponent for them at 140.

Dunkin and Bradley's promoter, Gary Shaw, have discussed the potential Bradley-Valero fight. Bradley is willing to fight any boxer as long as it makes sense. At the moment there has been no offer on the table from Valero's side. If the fight comes together, Showtime will televise. Valero suffered a nasty gash on the right side of his head during last Saturday's win over Antonio DeMarco. There is no information at the moment on how long that injury will take to fully heal or when Valero can return to the gym. Valero is also having a problem obtaining a visa to enter the country.

Timothy Bradley’s Promoter: “Amir Khan is a Fraud!”

By Rick Reeno - boxingscene.com
Earlier today, BoxingScene.com was contacted by promoter Gary Shaw, who had a lot to say after reading our story on the “Twitter” battle between junior welterweights Amir Khan and Paulie Malignaggi .

Khan is claiming that Malignaggi is avoiding a potential fight between the two of them, and Malignaggi is making the same claims about Khan. Shaw weighed in with a few comments of his own. He says Malignaggi is telling the truth, not Khan.

A few weeks ago, Shaw was negotiating with Khan’s former promoter Frank Warren to match the British champion against unbeaten WBO title holder Timothy Bradley. The two promoters were close to a deal, but it quickly went down the toilet when Khan signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Shaw was turned down when he reached out to Golden Boy to make a Khan-Bradley fight. Click Here For More

Antonio DeMarco, the Tijuana Tough Guy

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
When it comes to Antonio DeMarco, who challenges for the WBC lightweight title this Saturday night in Monterrey, Mexico (Showtime 9 PM, ET/PT), looks can be deceiving. His rather frail body looks as though a stiff breeze could knock him over. He’s got the arms the size of Olive Oyl, yet he packs a pretty stiff punch. DeMarco’s also a nice guy. And you know where Leo Durocher thought those guys ended up.

But you shouldn’t judge this book by its cover.

"He’s a very, very calm individual with a lot of self-confidence," says his promoter Gary Shaw, "and I guess, when you look at Tony DeMarco and his physique and everything else, you worry about him. You want to go run and get him a meal ticket. So he’s got a real deceiving personality for a fighter and, physically, he’s very deceiving for a fighter."

Is Tim Bradley Among Boxing's Most Feared Fighters?

SecondsOut Worst Decision of the Year:

With dubious scoring rearing its ugly head in championship fights on what seemed like a monthly basis, 2009 was not a good year for boxing’s decision makers.

A shortlist of the most questionable verdicts from this year naturally included Sergio Martinez only earning a draw with Kermit Cintron despite outlanding the Puerto Rican throughout and flooring him for more than 10 seconds in the seventh, Juan Diaz’s questionable unanimous decision over Paulie Malignaggi in August and Carl Froch’s narrowly retaining his WBC super-middleweight title against Andre Dirrell in October’s first stage of the Super Six series.

“HBO thinks a fight with Timothy Bradley is a good action fight,” said Cameron Dunkin, who manages Bradley and numerous other top prizefighters. “They don’t think Malignaggi would be a crowd pleasing fight.”

Bradley is Desert Stormin'
the Jr. Welterweight Division

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
As noted trainer Freddie Roach looks ahead to Manny Pacquiao’s March 13th showdown versus Floyd Mayweather, he has already made it clear who he’d like to utilize as sparring partners for this upcoming training camp. One is Amir Khan, who has already accepted the assignment. Which is not much of a surprise given that Khan is part of Roach’s stable at the Wild Card Boxing Club and has sparred with ’the Pac Man’ in the past. The other is reigning WBO jr. welterweight king, Tim Bradley.

This here will be a much harder sell. ’the Desert Storm’ like Khan, is a fighter who makes lucrative paydays and has a major championship on his resume. But unlike the WBA jr. welterweight title holder, he has no ties to Roach or his gym.

Danny Green Will Look To Destroy Bernard Hopkins

By Mark Vester - boxingscene.com
IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green (28-3, 25 KOs) is planning to destroy Bernard Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KOs) if the two fighters ever lock horns. Green loves to end his fights by knockout. He knows Hopkins will try to slow down the pace and make it a boxing match. Green tells the Philadelphia Daily News that he wants find out the hard way on which strategy will play out.

"I come to destroy my opponents," Green said. "Over 90 percent of my fights have ended in knockouts. My style is no secret. Bernard is a defensive genius. He's going to try to shut my offense down and hold out for a decision. I don't think he can do it, but there's only one way to find out, isn't there?" Click Here For More

Danny Green Machine Interview

By William Trillo - Pound4Pound.com
By now everyone in boxing is well aware of what Light Heavyweight Danny Green did to Roy Jones Jr. in Australia a couple of weeks ago. Coming off that first round blow out of Jones, Green made a trip Stateside to come watch the Gary Shaw promoted fights in California. Before Green left for his home down under promoter Gary Shaw made it possible for us to chat with Green to find out what his plans are after that huge victory.

Pound4Pound.com: Danny it's great to talk with you. How the heck are you?

Green: I am doing fantastic mate. I came over here to watch Vic Darchinyan fight and now I am in Las Vegas relaxing before I head back home tomorrow. Click Here For More

Bradley Is Poetry In Motion

Report & Photos By Roy & Marlene Marquez - Pound4Pound.com
Timothy Bradley stuck and moved his way past Lamont Peterson to retain the WBO 140 lb. championship at a sold out Agua Caliente Casino, Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, CA. Non-stop movement was not Bradley’s original game plan, but became plan B at the insistence of his corner. “The game plan was to take it to him, but he decided to take it to me”, explained Bradley of the change in tactics midway through the contest.

Bradley, of nearby Palm Springs, CA, found a home for his right hand early in the second. Bradley (25-0) landed the punch repeatedly in a round he won decisively. An overhand right dropped Peterson early in the third, setting the stage for a tremendous round of boxing. “I planned to win the first four rounds big”, said Peterson. “But when I went down in the third it was time to fight.” For the remainder of the round the combatants fought toe-to-toe exchanging vicious body blows. Peterson (27-1) continued the body assault in the fourth to win the round. “He made me fight”, said Bradley. “He made me do things in there I normally don’t do.”

Boxing's momentum stung by wave of suspect scoring

By Dave Skretta, AP Sports Writer
NEW YORK — Paul Malignaggi said all along that he'd never beat Juan Diaz in Texas if the fight went to the scorecards. It did, and he was right.

The Brooklyn-based light welterweight lost that bout in August, a back-and-forth brawl that left a huge crowd in Houston on its feet. But few believe it was as lopsided as the 118-110 scorecard turned in by Gale Van Hoy, with some accusing the judge of blatantly favoring the hometown fighter.

"Some people thought there was maybe more to it than just a bad decision. Only Gale Van Hoy will ever know that," said Malignaggi, who landed a rematch against Diaz this Saturday in Chicago.. Click Here For More

Round 2 to start with Abraham-Dirrell

Dates have been set for the second batch of bouts in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com on Friday.

Shaw is one of the five promoters with fighters involved in Showtime's revolutionary modified round-robin tournament featuring six elite super middleweights.

Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KOs), who is promoted by Shaw, will face tournament leader Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) of Germany in the pre-determined opener of Group Stage 2 on March 6 at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Click Here For More

Showtime to show Vazquez-Marquez IV

Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez have already waged an epic trilogy consisting of 25 rounds of furious, non-stop action. Now, the Mexican warriors will clash for the fourth -- and final -- time, the promoters for both fighters told ESPN.com on Friday.

The deal for the much-discussed fight was completed following a final conference call between Marquez promoter Gary Shaw, Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer, who promotes Vazquez, and Showtime executive Ken Hershman, Shaw said.

The scheduled 12-round featherweight fight will take place May 22 on Showtime from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Click Here For More

The Shaw-riff Seeks Justice for Funeka

By Steve Kim - maxboxing.com
It’s not clear who had a worse Thanksgiving weekend, Ali Funeka, who got the shaft from the judges in his fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title against Joan Guzman, or Tiger Woods who might have gotten the shaft of a sand wedge from his irate wife.

"Well, I would say Tiger because Ali didn’t get hit with anything," said Gary Shaw, who promotes the lanky South African. And he has a point, hey, it’s not like Funeka was ever laid out, needing medical attention.

But on a serious note, the scorecards rendered by judges Alan Davis and Benoit Russell, who both had the fight a dead even draw at 114-114( while Joseph Pasquale had Funeka winning big at 116-112) is the runaway choice as the worst decision of 2009. There is nary a soul who believes that Funeka did not win this fight handily. Click Here For More

What now for Hopkins? Maybe Dawson

By Dan Rafael - espn.com
Chad Dawson, the young light heavyweight star, has been calling out Bernard Hopkins for ages, but Hopkins didn't have a lot of interest in fighting him. And who could blame Hopkins, with a potential big-money rematch against Roy Jones Jr. on the table for early 2010?

However, that was until Jones got knocked out by Danny Green in the first round Wednesday in Australia, hopefully bringing Jones' great career to a close once and for all.

Hopkins will attend to his business Wednesday night against Enrique Ornelas, but there won't be a fight with Jones now. Click Here For More

Chad Dawson Calls Out Bernard Hopkins

Outside of the ropes, it takes a lot to get Chad Dawson riled up.

"Chad Dawson is one of the best fighters in the world, and he shows it every time that he goes into the ring," said Dawson's promoter, Gary Shaw. "It's just not Chad's style to talk smack or to call people out."

But that changed on Wednesday morning, after Dawson discovered that Roy Jones was stopped in the first round, likely scuttling a proposed, megabout with Bernard Hopkins -- a man Dawson has long targeted as an opponent. Click Here For More

Funeka robbery can't be swept under the rug

By Dan Rafael - espn.com
Bad decisions don't happen just in the United States and Germany. You can add Canada to the list.

Lightweight Ali Funeka dominated Joan Guzman so severely that the reading of the scorecards at the end of 12 mostly one-sided rounds appeared to be a mere formality on Saturday night at Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City.

Gary Shaw, who co-promotes Funeka with Cedric Kushner, was inside the ring after the final bell with a huge smile on his face, congratulating his man on what appeared clear as day -- that Funeka would win a unanimous decision and a vacant lightweight belt in his second shot at a 135-pound title. Gary Shaw speaks about the controversial
Funeka-Guzman decision

By Geoffrey Ciani - eastsideboxing.com
At the conclusion of Saturday night’s fight between Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman, the verdict seemed pretty clear—Ali Funeka won the fight. This was not an especially difficult fight to score. Funeka won, and he should have been awarded the vacant IBF lightweight title. To the astonishment of those in attendance and those watching around the world, the fight was inexplicably ruled a draw. I had a chance to speak with promoter Gary Shaw after the fight, and here is what he had to say:

Funeka beats up Guzman....but only gets a draw

El Paso Times
In the wake of Manny Pacquiao's demolition of Miguel Cotto - and some very real signs that boxing is emerging from a decades-long stupor - things have been looking pretty positive for the sweet science lately.

Leave it to a bad decision to remind us how boxing sank so low in the first place.

Despite outpunching and outslugging Joan Guzman in a battle for the vacant IBF lightweight title, Ali Funeka came away with only a draw to show for it Saturday in Quebec City, Canada. It was easily the most impressive performance of Funeka's career, as the South African put a hurtin' on the smaller Guzman early, ripping the native Dominican with every punch in the manual: jabs, right hands, left hooks and uppercuts.

Gary Shaw and The Canadian Heist

Jerry Glick - secondsout.com
HBO had a great show on Saturday night that was marred by yet another bad decision. This time it was a draw between unbeaten former two division champion Joan Guzman and Ali Funeka at the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Québec, Canada. While a draw may sound fair enough it clearly was not as Funeka, looking like a cross between Tommy Hearns and Paul Williams appeared to control the ring almost completely after the first two or three rounds.

After a few rounds Guzman’s face was a mask of blood that came from his nose and a cut. Once the long and lean Funeka got untracked it was almost all his fight to dominate.

I spoke to Funeka’s promoter Gary Shaw the next day and he was ready to fight everyone in sight who he believed screwed his charge.

Dawson wins but fails to entertain

By Dan Rafael - ESPN.com
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Whatever lingering questions anyone had about the veracity of light heavyweight Chad Dawson's decision win against Glen Johnson after their rousing slugfest in April 2008, they've been answered.

Dawson had won their initial meeting via unanimous decision, 116-112 on each of the three judges' scorecards to retain a light heavyweight world title. But Dawson faded late and there were questions left behind, especially from the Johnson camp, which claimed it was a robbery.

Dawson Makes Johnson Look His Age
With Near Shutout Unanimous Decision

Pound4Pound.com
Chad Dawson (now 29-0-0-1, 17 KO's) won a much easier fight with Glen Johnson than their first encounter, with a unanimous decision. Although two judges had it much too close (one round from being a draw), the reality was Johnson won about 2 rounds at most.

From the opening round, Dawson used his height, reach, and movement to land and move. That's how the majority of the fight went. Johnson's pressure wasn't the same as any of his previous fights, but one is to question whether his age has finally caught up with him, or was it Dawson's technique that caused the confusion.

Angulo Obliterates Yorgey In 3,
Candidate For KO Of The Year

Pound4Pound.com
Alfredo Angulo (now 17-1, 14 KO's) scored a more than impressive knockout over the previously undefeated, but untested, Harry Joe Yorgey in just 3 rounds. Angulo came out strong once the bell rang as Yorgey's plan was to move and box. Angulo pressured Yorgey to fight off the ropes, but Yorgey seemed to back himself there and into the corner often.

In round 2, a huge right hand stopped Yorgey in his tracks and momentarily knocked him unconscious while standing. Yorgey regained his senses before falling to the canvas, but was finally dropped moments later with another big right hand. Up on shaky legs, Yorgey was staggered around the ring as Angulo began beating him to a pulp. Yorgey miraculously made it out of the round, staggering to his corner.

With few appealing fights left,

Chad Dawson has a problem. A 175-pound problem, to be exact.

At 28-0, Dawson is arguably the most dominant force in the light heavyweight division. He holds a lopsided win over Tomasz Adamek, the current cruiserweight champion who recently demolished heavyweight Andrew Golota. He owns a win over Glen Johnson and two pulverizing victories over Antonio Tarver, the last of which ended Tarver's career. He has power (17 knockouts) and he has skill. Perez dethrones Agbeko in scorcher

Perez and Agbeko aren't the most well-known fighters around, but they're really good and exceptionally entertaining, something Showtime is aware of since it was featuring Agbeko for the third time in his past four bouts. This was a terrific action fight from start to finish and should be among the honorable mentions when it comes time to assess the best fights of the year. It sure was a sensational way for casino magnate Phil Ruffin to introduce boxing at the Treasure Island Hotel & Casino after making a deal with promoter Don King to host the show. Yonnhy Perez:
One Win Away from Becoming a Breakout Star

By Mario Ortega Jr. - 15rounds.com
One of the great things about boxing is that you never know from where the next great fighter will emerge. In many of today’s mainstream sports, “the next big thing” has been hyped since they laced up their cleats or athletic shoes for their high school. In boxing, a poor kid that barely owned a pair of shoes as a fifteen-year-old can become star with a ton of hard work and a few breaks. On Saturday night, Yonnhy Perez, who was joining the army in his native Colombia at an age when most teens are planning for their senior year, has a chance to make it big should he get past respected IBF Bantamweight Champion Joseph Agbeko in a bout televised nationwide by Showtime.  Click Here For More

I have respect for Agbeko as a fighter, but he's one-dimensional and Vic should have beaten him easily. He did not and now Yhonny Perez, his stablemate, will have to take care of business. Demarco will fight for the WBC interim world title on that same night against Alfaro and I believe so much in Antonio Demarco...I think Chad is going to light it up in front of his hometown fans. I believe he beat Glen Johnson in Florida in front of his hometown crowd. I believe he will do it more convincingly this time, so I'm really looking forward to it. I also have Ali Funeka in November fighting against Juan Guzman in Canada for the IBF title and I''m excited about that. Then we come back and we've got Ola Afolabi fighting in Germany against Marco Huck and I believe Ola Afolabi will knock him out and that will be another great victory for the WBO title. Perez, had to go on the road and defeat the respected Silence Mabuza to earn this shot at the title. Adding some spice to the proceedings is that Agbeko has predicted a stoppage of Perez and he crashed his media day in Santa Fe Springs, where the two engaged in some good ol’ fashioned jawing.( Hey, when you’re two relatively unknown bantamweights, you gotta do something to drum up interest.) I don't think the point deduction was warranted, but it was a dirty fight on Froch's part, with a lot of hitting behind the head, continuously, even throwing him down in the 5th round. Judges need to score, in my book, not on style, but on effective blows. If you watch the fight, Dirrell landed more blows than Froch did."  Click Here For More

Angulo: "El Perro" Wants To
Prove That He Still Has Bite

By Thomas Gerbasi - boxingscene.com
There’s nothing like a big fight night in Las Vegas. It’s the perfect place for fans to see and meet their heroes, and also a big deal for the fighters, as they have a chance to be seen and to greet their public.

Promoter Gary Shaw knows this, so he made it a point to bring one of his hot prospects, 2004 Mexican Olympian Alfredo ‘Perro’ Angulo, to the MGM Grand a little over a year ago, to test the waters of public perception.

Shaw was shocked by the reception Angulo received as they left the arena, but there was something different about the whole thing. Click Here For More

Dawson's Do-Over

By Nat Gottlieb - HBO.com
While he may be undefeated in 28 career fights, Chad Dawson's record is not without blemish. In 2004, he beat Aundalen Sloan decisively in a six-rounder only to see the fight declared a no-contest after a drug test revealed marijuana in Dawson's system. After steamrolling through his next 11 opponents — including then-unbeaten champion Tomasz Adamek — last year Dawson ran into a roadblock named Glen Johnson, a rugged 39-year-old who gave him everything he could handle and more. The three scorecards all said Dawson won, 116-112, but others judged that the 27-year-old light heavyweight had lost. Click Here For More

Andre Dirrell aims to be Gary Shaw’s next big thing

By Ron Lewis - timesonline.co.uk
Gary Shaw has been around enough champions to know that it does not do your credibility much good to make outlandish predictions.

In 2005, the American promoter arrived in Britain accompanying Jeff Lacy, the unbeaten IBF super-middleweight champion and a man being touted as the new Mike Tyson. So confident was Shaw of victory for his man that he said he would bet his house on it. But the man in the other corner was Joe Calzaghe.
