NONITO DONAIRE

VIDEO INTERVIEW: NONITO DONAIRE (boxingconfidential.com 10.20.07) (watch video)

Ask newly-crowned IBF/IBO flyweight champion NONITO DONAIRE if he has a lucky number and he may respond with 07-07-07...the date he pulled off the "upset of the year" by starching the previously undefeated and invincible defending champion Vic Darchinyan with the "knockout of the year."  Donaire (18-1, 11 KOs), known as "The Filipino Flash," is a native of General Santos City in The Philippines, now living in San Leandro, Calif.  Moving down from his familiar stomping grounds as a super flyweight, Donaire extended his six-year winning streak to 17 fights landing a left hook to the jaw of Darchinyan (28-1, 22 KOs), ending the fight, and Darchinyan's 2 1/2 year (including six successful defenses) title reign at :28 of round five.  Donaire is promoted by Gary Shaw and managed by Cameron Dunkin.

"For all my people in The Philippines who didn't believe in me before, I hope you are  believers in me now," exclaimed a joyous Donaire.  "I worked so hard for this fight and I always knew if I were given the opportunity to fight Darchinyan I would beat him, even if it meant me going down to a weight I hadn't fought at in many years.  I am proud to be a Filipino and I hope my people are just as proud of me as their new world champion.  We will move forward together defending this title."

POST FIGHT HEADLINES:
“The Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire Proud of His Filipino Warriors (boxingconfidentail.com 8.12.07) I think tonight you saw what Filipino boxers are all about. We are humble warriors that always come to fight and put on a great show. This is not to put down the Mexican fighters who have been holding down boxing for a long time now but I think we showed that we definitely belong in the same class as them. (full story)

Sharkie's Machine: Donaire KO's Darchinyan in Five (eastsideboxing.com 7.7.07) 7-7-7 didn’t turn out to be lucky numbers for Vic Darchinyan (28-1,22 KO’s) Saturday night in Connecticut, where he defended his Title against Nonito Donaire, the brother of a former beaten Darchinyan opponent, Glenn Donaire. (full story)

Donaire knocks out Darchinyan in stunning upset (secondsout.com 7.8.07) “I came in here as an underdog,” said Donaire. “Nobody believed in me but I did it. I said yesterday that one punch can make a difference between me and him. I think the key for me in tonight’s fight was every time Darchinyan threw and landed, I punched back and that got him thinking. It took the bully out of him.” (full story)

Smashing the Jinx (philboxing.com 7.9.07) When Manny Pacquiao gave up the linear world featherweight title bestowed upon him by Ring magazine in 2005 Filipino boxers went into a very worrisome losing streak in world title fights. (full story)
